Liquidity sweeps, order blocks and market structure (BOS, CHoCH)
By Karel Moreau, editor of tradingmentorreviews ·
A liquidity sweep is when price pushes through an obvious high or low — where stop orders cluster — triggers them, and then reverses. ICT and smart-money traders read the sweep as large players filling orders against those stops, and look for an entry once price shifts structure the other way. Order blocks, breaks of structure and changes of character are the tools used to time that entry.
Why stops cluster where they do
Traders put stops just beyond obvious levels: the prior day's high and low, equal highs, a round number, the session open. When price reaches those levels, the stops become market orders all at once. That burst of orders is the "liquidity". A sweep is the move that takes it — often a sharp spike through the level and a quick return.
Liquidity sweep vs breakout
| Sweep (stop run) | Genuine breakout | |
|---|---|---|
| What price does | Pierces the level, fails to hold, closes back inside | Pierces the level and holds beyond it |
| Candle shape | Long wick through the level | Body closes through the level |
| What follows | Reversal and a break of structure the other way | Continuation; the old level becomes support/resistance |
| The trap | Breakout traders entering on the spike | Reversal traders fading real strength |
The two look identical while they are happening. That is the honest difficulty: a sweep is only clearly a sweep afterwards, which is why most sweep examples you see are drawn in hindsight.
Order blocks
An order block is the last opposite-coloured candle before a strong move — the last down candle before a rally, or the last up candle before a drop. ICT reads it as where institutions built their position, and expects price to react if it returns. In practice, traders mark the candle's body or full range as a zone and wait for a retest, often combined with a fair value gap left by the same move.
Break of structure and change of character
- Break of structure (BOS): in an uptrend, price makes a new higher high past the previous swing high — trend continuation.
- Change of character (CHoCH), or market structure shift (MSS): the first time price breaks a swing point against the trend — in an uptrend, breaking below the last higher low. It is the signal that a sweep may have turned into a reversal.
How the pieces fit into one setup
- Mark the obvious liquidity (prior day high/low, equal highs/lows).
- Wait for price to sweep it, ideally during a session open.
- Wait for a change of character in the opposite direction.
- Enter on a retrace into the order block or fair value gap created by that shift.
- Stop beyond the sweep's extreme; target the opposing liquidity.
Written like that, it is a testable rule — and it should be tested before real money goes near it. Every step involves a judgement call (which high counts as "obvious", which swing counts as structure), so two students of the same mentor can take different trades. Ask any mentor selling this model how they define each step, and for a timestamped record of it.

Frequently asked questions
What is a liquidity sweep in trading?
Price pushing through an obvious high or low where stops cluster, triggering them, then reversing.
What is the difference between a liquidity sweep and a stop hunt?
They describe the same move. "Stop hunt" implies intent; "sweep" is the ICT/SMC term.
What is an order block?
The last opposite-coloured candle before a strong move, marked as a zone where price may react on a return.
What is the difference between BOS and CHoCH?
A break of structure continues the trend; a change of character is the first break against it and hints at reversal.
How do you tell a sweep from a breakout?
Only by what happens next: a sweep closes back inside the level and shifts structure the other way; a breakout holds beyond it.
